FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Case Study
GSA National Laboratories (ATF) Beltsville, MD
The building houses the laboratories of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and a Fire Research Center, the first in the world that conducts fire
re-enactments. The interior wayfinding had to account for the needs of public visitors (tours conducted daily), new employees and visiting scientists.
AB Design created an interior numbering and signage system. The wayfinding system identifies spaces and hazards, while being aware of safety and security concerns. The system includes over 50 signtypes with area specific color-codes. Working with the architect and laboratory representatives, we designed comprehensive safety, warning and regulatory signage. We applied over 30 custom symbols to identify potential hazards and chemicals being used, warnings, regulations and safety concerns which are clearly posted outside each area. Directional signage and maps are strategically placed throughout the facility. The client with satisfied with the end result. AB Design was also engaged to develop the signage for the ATF headquarters in Washington, DC.
